Technocult is the acronym for the research programme Technologies of Culture – Cultures of Technology, which is dedicated to the analysis of techno-cultural phenomena in the contemporary, its roots in the past, and its consequences for the future. The programme binds together a range of closely connected themes within the humanities, which have been developed within multi-disciplinary projects at Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden. The themes concern culture in its social as well as aesthetic sense, and especially the mechanisms by which knowledge and values are reproduced as the basic pillars of culture. Examples of such techniques are new as well as old media technologies (traditionall mass media as well as new digital, mobile and personal media). However, knowledge and values are also formed around other kinds of techniques, e.g. architechtonic, medical, social, political, technologies. The scientific objective is to develop the theoretical understanding of the technologies of culture (the techniques that help build and maintain contemporary culture), in vastly techno-saturated societies, and at the same time study the increased technological impact in these societies.
