Members of the Faculties of Engineering, Humanities and Medicine, and the Swedish Parkinson Academy have decided to join their efforts to develop novel disease modifying, neuroprotective or restorative therapies for basal ganglia disorders. Including Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, basal ganglia disorders constitute a family of chronic and severely disabling diseases, that lead to hospitalization and death. Improvement of quality-of-life for patients and their families is the ultimate goal of this initiative. The holistic approach of this program ensures that the new scientific developments achieved are in tune with the needs and views of these groups and society at large. To consolidate this initiative Lund University has been granted 75 million SEK (Linnaeus Grant) . The program has been denominated as BAGADILICO (Basal Ganglia Disorders Linnaeus Consortium) and will start activities during the fall of 2008.
