Background

Sofia Johansson (b. 1975) is Lecturer in Media and Communication Studies at Södertörns högskola (University College). She received her PhD from the University of Westminster in 2006, for a thesis titled ‘Reading Tabloids: A Study of Readers of the Sun and the Daily Mirror’. She has worked at Södertörn since the autumn of 2006 and teaches on a number of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her research interests cover journalism, media reception and popular culture.

Sofia is a member of the research team on the project ‘The role of the media to identity and democracy’, which, led by Peter Petrov and Cecilia von Feilitzen, examines media use in Stockholm and St Petersburg. She is also a co-ordinator within the umbrella project ‘Cultures of Technology, Technologies of Culture’. She is a founding board member of the journal Westminster Papers in Communication and Culture, where she has edited a special issue on ‘celebrity culture’ (2005) and is co-editing a forthcoming (2008) issue on the future of news journalism.
